Scientific Benefits of Gratitude
How does gratitude work?
Gratitude has deep roots in human evolution, helping society to develop by facilitating trust, strong relationships and altruistic behavior. Expressions of gratitude are found in every culture around the world throughout time. It's also embedded in the inner workings of our minds, with neuroscience identifying specific areas of the mesolimbic and basal forebrain (the brain's "reward center") and prefrontal cortex involved with experiencing gratitude.

Gratitude helps us to see that helping others--even if it comes at a cost to ourselves in short-term--will actually benefit us in the long run by helping us to form lasting bonds. In that way, gratitude is an inherently social emotion. And the icing on the cake is that gratitude actually just feels good, so we get benefits even as we give thanks.

People who are more grateful may be naturally inclined to be altruistic. But while research shows that our genes and upbringing play a part in how predisposed we are to feeling grateful, the great news is we can all become more grateful through practice. Research suggests that a gratitude practice can actually rewire our brains, changing our neural makeup to feel more rewarded with other people benefit.

To put it plainly, gratitude allows us to feel good by recognizing the good things in our life and sharing those benefits with others. By spending time developing a habit of noticing good, expressing that feeling, and sharing gratitude, and we can all put gratitude to work in our lives to be healthier, happier and more connected.
What are the scientific benefits of gratitude?
A body of research into the science of gratitude has emerged in recent decades. Finding have established a gratitude practice can benefit in the following areas:
According to the research, how long will it take to experience the benefits?
Research that has demonstrated physical and mental benefits from gratitude practices like gratitude journaling has generally lasted between three and ten weeks or longer. There is evidence to suggest that three weeks is a good benchmark, though it varies by person and depending on the regularity of practice.
